What can I use Stellar MD Editor for?

Common uses: editing README and other documentation files in a code repository, writing posts for a static site generator or blogging platform, keeping notes and wikis in Markdown, or just drafting plain text. The app only edits the raw Markdown source, so the formatting appears wherever that file is later opened, rendered, or published, on GitHub, a static site, a notes app, or any other tool that reads Markdown.

How do I open a file?

In Google Drive™, right-click a .txt or .md file, choose "Open with", then "Stellar MD Editor". While editing, the Open button next to Save lets you switch to another file without leaving the editor. The app can only access files you open with it or create through it.

Can I open files with a double-click, without the right-click menu?

Yes, with a one-time setting: in Google Drive™, click the gear icon, then "Settings", then "Manage apps", find Stellar MD Editor, and tick "Use by default". From then on, double-clicking a .txt or .md file opens it in the editor directly.

Does it work on my phone?

Yes. Open md.vedaispace.com in your phone's browser, tap "Open a file from Drive™", and pick the file; editing and saving work the same as on desktop. The Google Drive™ mobile app cannot launch web editors from its "Open with" menu (a platform limitation that applies to all web apps), so start from this page instead.

Where do my changes go?

Click Save or press Ctrl+S (Cmd+S on Mac). "Saved to Drive" appears in the top bar next to the Save button, and your changes are written back to the same file in your Google Drive™. The app stores nothing anywhere else; open the file again at any time to continue where you left off.

What happens if I close the tab with unsaved changes?

Your browser shows its own "leave site" warning whenever there are unsaved changes, the same moment the dot next to the file name appears. Switching files with the Open button uses a separate, in-app confirmation, since it replaces the tab's content in place instead of navigating away.

I typed **bold** but the text does not look bold

That is by design. Stellar MD Editor is a plain-text editor: it shows and saves the Markdown source exactly as written, with no formatted preview. The formatting appears wherever the file is viewed or published (websites, wikis, and apps that render Markdown).

Can I use Markdown syntax that is not in the cheatsheet, like tables or images?

Yes. The editor is a plain textarea, so you can type any valid Markdown syntax, including tables, images, and footnotes. The cheatsheet only lists the handful of syntax rules used most often, plus the wrap-on-selection keys; everything else you type is saved exactly as written.

How do I create a new file?

In Google Drive™, click "New", then "More", then "Stellar MD Editor"; an Untitled.md file is created in the current folder. You can also use the "New file in My Drive™" button on the app's home page.

How do I rename a file?

Click the file name at the top of the editor, type the new name, and press Enter.

Which permissions does the app use?

Per-file access only (the drive.file scope): the app can see just the files you open with it or create through it, and nothing else. Details are in the Privacy Policy.
